Pakistanis are excited about the recent launch of the digital telecom “Onic Sim,” which claims to offer fast support, snap activation, and several other features. The launch of Onic Sim could be revolutionary, as people are paying huge taxes on other telecoms following recent taxations. As the telecom authority in a country of over 240 million grows, the addition of new players is likely to increase competition and keep prices in check.
Onic Sim Price
The new player in the Pakistani telecommunications market, ONIC, is offering a SIM card for Rs. 100. However, some retailers are selling it for Rs. 150.
The Sad Reality of Onic Sim
The campaigns being run show that Onic Sim is a revolution in Pakistan’s telecom sector. However, this is not true. There are no revolutionary features that Onic Sim will bring. It is just a rebranded “Ufone” and will utilize Ufone towers to provide signals. The speed, connectivity, and everything else will be similar to Ufone.
There is nothing to be excited about. It is true that Onic may offer cheaper packages initially to grab some market share, but afterward, prices will return to normal levels. In this age, what Pakistan needs are not such operators but big investments to promote 5G and bring high-speed 4G connectivity to all areas of Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Telecom Services
Pakistan’s cellular service quality ranks low globally, with a score of 79 out of 100 according to the Inclusive Internet Index. One of the primary reasons for this is the lack of investment in telecom infrastructure. Currently, Pakistan’s telecom operators only have 274 MHz spectrum to serve the 7th largest number of telecom users in the world. For comparison, a single telecom operator in Australia (Optus) uses over 345 MHz.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is launching a new telecom, “Onic Sim,” to provide better services to its citizens. It is imperative that Pakistan improves its 4G infrastructure and accelerates the rollout of 5G.
Umar Saif had a productive meeting with the Chairman of PTA to discuss measures to accelerate the auction of 5G. The aim is to add at least an additional 300 MHz to provide better telecom and internet services to Pakistani citizens. This will also bring several billion dollars in investment to Pakistan.
