According to some recently leaked information, Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in development for nearly a decade. It is not the only project that Rockstar has been working on. The leak also reveals that Rockstar has made two Bully games in the past. This unofficial insight into Rockstar’s past and present projects comes shortly after Take-Two’s financial report suggested a potential release window for GTA 6.
Although Rockstar’s development cycles have become exceedingly long over the years. The company has never been one to rest on its laurels when it comes to Grand Theft Auto games. GTA 5 began development around 2008. Obviously not long after the fourth numbered entry in the series was released. Similarly, the pre-production on GTA 4 started in November 2004, just as GTA San Andreas hit the market.
GTA 6 Development Timeline Revealed By Former Rockstar Employee
A recently spotted LinkedIn profile of former Rockstar Research Video Editor Jon Young suggests that GTA 6 has followed a similar pattern. The industry veteran revealed that he worked on Grand Theft Auto 6 for a three-year period ending in 2018. Also when he left the company after a 13-year stint. This detail implies that the upcoming game began development no later than 2015. possibly around spring. When Rockstar released the highly anticipated PC port of GTA 5.
Young also stated that he participated in the development of two Bully sequels in 2008. It is now widely known that Bully 2 was once in production and later canceled. But the former Rockstar employee is the first person to ever imply that Bully 3 was also planned at some point.
Considering that Young’s job description at Rockstar involved producing “internal journalism”. Also handling location shoots used to inform and support the work of other departments. It seems that the video editor was involved in the company’s projects from their earliest stages of pre-production. And although there is no evidence that Bully 3 ever progressed beyond that development phase. Bully 2 was reportedly well advanced by the time it was canceled around 2010. With previous insider reports suggesting that Rockstar New England managed to complete at least six hours of playable content before the project was scrapped
According to this new information. GTA 6 has been in development for almost twice as long as GTA 5. This suggests that the long-awaited game may soon be released. As a reliable source recently claimed that GTA 6 is aiming for a 2024/2025. If this comes out true, it will mean that GTA 6 took 10 years to get released.
