iPhone 14 series was made official with four new models. iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max. This year, the difference between the Pro and Non-Pro iPhones has been widened. Moreover, the mini is replaced by the new iPhone 14 Plus. While the Pro models get a new front design and an upgraded camera system.
iPhone 14 & 14 Plus – Underwhelming
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have the same A15 Bionic as the iPhone 13 Pro models. The iPhone 13 Pro series had the A15 chip with 5 GPU cores as compared to 3 GPU cores on the A15 chip in non-pro iPhone 13 models. Moreover, the new iPhones have an upgraded internal design with upgraded thermals.
The base model has a 6.1″ OLED 60Hz panel while the Plus model has a 6.7″ 60Hz OLED panel. Furthermore, Apple claims that the 6.7″ iPhone 14 Plus has the best battery life of any iPhone. These new iPhones also have the Crash Detection Feature as well. In addition, the design is the same as last year with the diagonal camera array and notch at the front.
Another change is the new main camera. The new main 12MP sensor at the rear is larger and has a 49% low-light improvement. Moreover, the new selfie camera with AF also has a 38% low-light improvement. There is also a new Photonic Engine for photographic enhancements. Furthermore, there is also Action Mode Stabilization for videos.
Another interesting piece of news is that the US variants of all iPhone models have no SIM tray. There is only E-Sim support. Another feature on the new iPhone variants is Emergency SOS via Satellite if you won’t have a cellular connection. Lastly, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus start at $799 and $899 respectively.
iPhone 14 Pro & 14 Pro Max – An Easy Pill To Swallow
iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have upgraded 120Hz promotion OLED displays. Moreover, the displays on both have 2000 nits of peak brightness. The Pro has a 6.1″ panel while the Pro Max has a 6.7″ panel. Both have LTPO panels which can vary refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz. The most anticipated feature is the Always-On Display which is exclusive to Pro iPhones. There is a new punch-hole cut-out instead of the notch. Apple calls it the ‘Dynamic Island’.
Apple has pulled off something unique with the pill-shaped cut-out. The Dynamic Island Pill can be interacted with by touch and can be used for different functions. Incoming calls, music player, Face ID detection, Stopwatch, and many other actions will interact through this new Pill-shaped notch. This is something never before seen.
Moreover, the Pro models are powered by the all-new A16 Bionic chipset. Another huge upgrade is the new camera system. The main rear camera is a 48MP sensor. It is a quad-pixel sensor and is 65% larger than the last generation. Apple claims to have integrated 2x low-light improvement. The flash is also 2 times brighter. Apple has also included ProRAW at 48MP. The other two sensors are 12MP ultra-wide and telephoto sensors. Lastly, there are new colors for the Pro models – Space Black, Gold, Silver, Deep Purple. iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999 and the Pro Max starts at $1099.
