Huawei Mate 50 series has been launched in China. There are four phones in total – standard Huawei Mate 50, Mate 50 Pro, Mate 50 RS Porsche Design, and Mate 50E. The first three phones are premium offerings, while the Mate 50E is a cheaper option. Below are the specifications, features, and pricing of all the new Mate 50 phones.
Huawei Mate 50 – The preferable choice!
The standard Mate 50 is a lot similar to the high-end Mate 50 Pro. Of course, there are some premium features missing out but the price justifies it. Starting with the display, the Mate 50 sports a 6.7-inch OLED screen with 2700*1224 resolution. It has a 90Hz refresh rate straight screen with fancy features such as 300Hz touch sampling rate, 1440Hz PWM dimming, 1.07 billion primary color display, HDR, support face unlock, and finally the under-display fingerprint scanner. Worth noting that the standard Mate 50 features a punch hole notch.
Powering the phone is Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 without 5G modem. Moving to the camera department, it gets a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera (f / 2.2, super macro shooting), a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (RYYB, 5x optical zoom, f / 3.4, OIS optical image stabilization), 100x Zoom range (13mm-1350mm), and star of the show 50-megapixel ultra-optical variable camera (RYYB, f/1.4-f/4.0) with laser focus sensor, and 10-channel multispectral sensor. On the front, there is a 13MP ultrawide camera with f/2.4 aperture.
Finally, the Mate 50 has 4460mAh battery with 66W wired fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging, and 7.5W wireless reverse charging.

Huawei Mate 50 Pro – all the fancy features
Being a Pro, it gets some improvements over the standard one. Starting with the display, it is having a 120Hz refresh rate panel with curved edged instead of 90Hz flat. Other than that, the display features remains the same: 300Hz touch sampling rate, 1440Hz PWM dimming, 1.07 billion primary color display, HDR / HDR Vivid, supports 3D face payment, and in-screen fingerprint. This one has the standard iPhone-inspired notch.
The chipset with the Mate 50 Pro remains the same; Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Furthermore, it has a 13-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera (f / 2.2, super macro shooting), a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (RYYB, 3.5x optical zoom, f / 3.5, OIS optical image stabilization), 200 Double zoom range (13mm-2700mm), and the primary 50-megapixel super-optical variable camera (RYYB, f/1.4-f/4.0, OIS optical image stabilization). The camera setup is completed by proximity light sensor, laser focus sensor, 10-channel multispectral sensor.
The notable difference between Mate 50 & Mate 50 Pro’s camera is the more advanced telephoto lens on the latter. The selfie camera also remains similar to the vanilla version.
Mate 50 Pro is powered by a 4,700 mAh battery with 66W wired fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging, and 7.5W wireless reverse charging.

Mate 50 RS Porsche Design – a few add-ons and attractive design
The Mate 50 RS Porsche Design edition is a lot similar to the Mate 50 Pro. There are just some tiny differences in hardware, but mostly the notable change is in the design language.
The special edition drops out the 64MP telephoto for a 48MP periscope telephoto camera with macro capabilities. The company has given a lot of insights on how the new super macro camera is industry leading, but macro photography is for a specific group of people, while most prefer to have superior primary or ultrawide sensor.
The main highlight of the Mate 50 RS has to be its design. It keeps the supercar design gene, with a rear-camera iconic star diamond design, central axis symmetry aesthetics, and a premium sculptural ceramic body. There are two colors including Blue and Purple.

Huawei Mate 50 Series Features
Satellite communication
This is the worlds first series to support Beidou satellite messages. What it means is that it can send messages through the Changlian App without terrestrial network signal coverage.
XMAGE camera system
After the farewell to Leica, we were wondering what Huawei will bring with the next phones. Well, Huawei has launched its own XMAGE camera system. The XMAGE camera system aims to deliver natural photos, better light shades, and clear details.
Kunlun glass
This is basically Huawei’s answer to Corning Gorilla Glass. According to translated Chinese statement, “A piece of mobile phone panel glass contains hundreds of billions of high-strength nanocrystals, which are resistant to impact and cracking.” Kunlun glass has also manged to get Swiss SGS five-star drop-resistant certification.
HarmonyOS 3.0
The Mate 50 series comes out of the box with the latest HarmonyOS 3.0 operating system. It has more privacy features, and concept of universal cards which are very similar to iPhone’s new widgets.
Huawei Mate 50 Series opinions
The satellite feature, and new camera system are pretty intresting. However, I wasn’t expecting the huge notch on Mate 50 Pro. Huawei should have focused on a better solution rather than putting a notch straight out of their previous phones. Also, the lack of 5G is a big con. If the pricing is similar to other flagships, the future of the series in the global market looks dense. But for the Chinese market, I am pretty sure it’s a success.
