Folding Phones are becoming the latest trend in the smartphone market. Recently, a lot of foldable phones have been released. Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, Moto Razr 2022, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, and Z Fold 4 have been launched recently. They all come with several refinements and new features over their predecessors. Huawei and OPPO are also in this game. There are even rumors about an Apple Folding Phone. However, there are still some Pros & Cons of Folding Phones. Firstly, let’s take a look at what the latest folding phones offer.

Motorola Razr 2022

Firstly, the device features an upgraded 2.65″ OLED secondary panel. You will be able to do more with this cover display than with the last gen. Moreover, the main display is a 6.67″ OLED panel with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 and a 144Hz refresh rate. The device weighs 200g and the dimensions measure 166.99×79.79×7.62(mm). In addition, the fingerprint is side-mounted. The bezels are minimal. This is, by far, the best-designed foldable by Motorola yet.

The Razr 2022 has a 600mAh + 2,660mAh dual cell battery. It supports 33W charging speeds. Motorola promises an all-day battery with their new foldable. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1. In addition, it is available in 8GB, 12GB, and 18GB RAM configurations paired with 128GB, 256GB or 512GB internal storage.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. Moreover, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 6.7″ FHD+ 120Hz Super AMOLED display. The bezels are thinner than in the last generation. In addition, the cover display will be a 1.9″ screen. The device weighs 187g and measures 6.9mm thick when unfolded. Furthermore, the Z Flip 4 packs a 3700 mAh battery. The device supports 25W wired and 10W wireless charging speeds.

The camera system has a 12MP OIS-enabled main sensor accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. The selfie shooter housed inside a punch-hole at the center of the display is a 10MP sensor. Z Flip 4 is also IPX8 rated for water resistance. Lastly, the device will be running Android 12-based One UI 4.1.1 out of the box.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

The Galaxy Fold 4 is powered by the same Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 processor. Fold 4 has a 6.2″ 120Hz front display which has a wider aspect ratio. Moreover, the hinge has also been refined and is thinner than before. There is a 10MP selfie shooter housed inside a punch-hole in the front display. Furthermore, the device has a 7.6″ main display which also has a 120Hz refresh rate and supports S-Pen functionality. It houses the 2nd-Gen Under Display Camera which has a resolution of 4MP. The device measures 6.3mm thick when unfolded and 15.8mm when it is folded. Moreover, the device weighs 263g.

Samsung has upgraded the camera system of the Fold 4 as well. The device comes with a 50MP OIS-enabled main sensor at the rear. It is accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide and 10MP telephoto lens. The Fold 4 runs on Android 12L-based One UI 4.1.1. Lastly, the device packs a 4400 mAh battery with 25W fast charging support.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2

The Mix Fold 2 is only 5.4mm thin when unfolded. This is an insane width Xiaomi has achieved with this foldable. Moreover, it measures 11.4mm thick when folded. The thickness of a folding device is a significant aspect of the design and hand feel. Furthermore, another important factor that makes the user experience hassle-free is the aspect ratio of the device.

Xiaomi has made a wider front display so that it feels as close to a normal phone as possible. In addition, the weight of the device is 262g. There is a triple-rear camera setup. The rectangular module at the rear also has the Leica branding. Lastly, when unfolded, the hinge also appears invisible which is a step further from the Z Fold 4’s thinner hinge.

The Mix Fold 2 is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1. It features a 6.56″ FHD+ E5 OLED front display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Moreover, the main display is an 8″ 2K ECO-OLED panel which also has a 120Hz refresh rate. The device also has an X-axis haptic motor for tighter vibrations. Furthermore, the Mix Fold 2 packs a 4500 mAh battery with 65W fast charging.

The triple-rear camera setup is spear-headed by a 50MP main sensor which is also optically stabilized. In addition, there are 13MP and 8MP sensors as well. The selfie shooter housed inside a punch-hole on the cover display is a 20MP sensor. Lastly, the device runs Android 12L out of the box. The device starts at CNY 8999 which translates roughly into PKR 295K.

Pros & Cons

Firstly, let’s talk about the positives. The folding devices are multi-tasking beasts. You can get more out of a folding device in terms of productivity. Moreover, flip devices have the advantage of being pocket-friendly. With the S-Pen support on Samsung’s folding phones, the multi-tasking and productivity aspect is further enhanced. They look and feel futuristic and are fun to use as well.

However, on the flip side, there are also a lot of negatives. Especially, flip phones are nothing but normal phones that fold with worse durability. The only plus of flip-style phones is pocketability. Furthermore, another con is the crease. Manufacturers still haven’t cracked the code. The crease doesn’t seem to vanish soon. Moreover, the durability of the folding screens is still not at the level of normal phones.

Battery life is another negative you may face on these devices. Lastly, the pricing is still not what mainstream devices should have. The Fold-style devices are still way too expensive. Although flip phones are priced similarly to normal phones, they offer nothing more than a normal phone at that price.
