Samsung is the pioneer of folding smartphones in the world. They have made a mark with their folding devices being if not the best, the better ones. The Z Flip and the Z Fold would be considered some normal ways for a device to fold, but Samsung is having other ideas. The Korean giant has now applied patent for a Samsung L-Shaped folding smartphone. Let’s see how this bizarre shape operates.
Samsung L-Shaped Folding Smartphone
Well, first of all, the device is unnamed. We are calling it the Samsung L-Shaped Folding Smartphone because of its shape. It might sound stupid to have an L-shaped smartphone, but let’s take a look before making any judgements.
This patent was uncovered and rendered by Let’sGoDigital. This patent was submitted by Samsung Electronics to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) in mid-2021, named “Electronic Device Consisting of a Flexible Display”, and was approved and published on January 20, 2022.
Looks
The renders here were made by Graphic designer Jermaine Smit (aka Concept Creator).
Now, in the folded form, the smartphone looks like a normal smartphone, until you see the device from the back. The upper half of the display wraps around the back of the device connecting to the camera module. When you unfold the device, the upper half of the display which was wrapped around is designed to come forward and lock into place on a level with the main display. Making the device look like an upsidedown “L” shape.
The device from that back is plain with just a vertical camera module on the left edge where the smaller part of the display merges. Furthermore, the device reminds me of the LG Wing as it had a similar form factor of a wide upper display. However, unlike the wing, this has only one display.
Usage Of The Display
Samsung says they plan to have a strong hinge with Ultra-thin glass to achieve this goal. The patent also mentions some use case scenarios. A PIP (Picture in Picture) mode will automatically be initiated on the smaller part of the display. The upper part can also be used as a viewfinder while the controls appear on the lower half.
Other than that, a triple camera setup on the back and a hole punch on the front can be seen. The device will have dual batteries.
The patent is only in the document form. No information is available on when the device will enter production. So, what do you guys think of the Samsung L-Shaped folding smartphone? Share your thoughts in the comments.
