PTA has increased the tax for importing smartphones in Pakistan. This time the rates have risen by more than double what they used to be. Here is the complete breakdown of what taxes will be applicable on your imported smartphone for 2022.
What is PTA tax?
PTA short for Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is an authority in Pakistan that controls all of the telecommunication matters. Anything connected with that, like the internet, Sim, calling is all connected to PTA. Every company that needs to operate anything telecom-related has to contact PTA.
Now, PTA has imposed a tax on imported mobile phones, you need to pay the tax and register the IMEI of your device to the authority in order to use your sim card. However, recently, the government has increased the tax to a new height which is almost double what it was before.
PTA duty and tax calculator for importing smartphones 2022
Here are the latest rates for PTA to import mobile phones in Pakistan.
For Passport Holders;
Phones up to $30 will get taxed Rs. 430
Phones from $30 to $100 will get taxed Rs. 3200
Phones from $100 to $200 will get taxed Rs. 9580
Phones from $200 to $350 will get taxed Rs. 12200 +Sales Tax
Phones from $350 to $500 will get taxed Rs. 17800 + Sales Tax
and finally Phones from $500 and above Rs. 27600 + Sales Tax
For CNIC Holders;
Phones up to $30 will get taxed Rs. 550
Phones from $30 to $100 will get taxed Rs. 4323
Phones from $100 to $200 will get taxed Rs. 11561
Phones from $200 to $350 will get taxed Rs. 14661 +Sales Tax
Phones from $350 to $500 will get taxed Rs. 23420 + Sales Tax
and finally Phones from $500 and above Rs. 37007 + Sales Tax
What is Sales Tax?
From the above list, you must be wondering what is sales tax? So, Ad Valorem Sales Tax is imposed on top of the monetary value of the taxed item, which means that people will be charged a base tax plus a 17% sales tax depending on the exact value of the smartphone.
How to check the PTA status of your device?
You can easily check the PTA status of your device by messaging the IMEI of your device to 8484. To get the IMEI of your device, all you need to do is dial *#06#. Alternatively, you can hop over to the DIRBS website or download the DIRBS app on the Google Play Store.
All these new PTA approval rates have made it really hard for people to import smartphones. Ending on a positive note, this will force the companies to assemble smartphones in Pakistan.
