MediaTek just announced its latest Dimensity 9000 processor. MediaTek is not known to produce high-end flagship processors. However, recently MediaTek has started to produce chipsets for the premium mid-range and budget flagship ranges. Dimensity series of processors have been a breath of fresh air. They have become fairly common now in the budget flagship and upper mid-range categories of smartphones.
MediaTek’s Rejuvenation
The Taiwanese company’s Helio series was very common in budget phones. They never really aimed for the upper-tier market. But, in Q1 2020 they revealed their first Dimensity series chipset. It was the dawning of a rejuvenated MediaTek.
Popularity Of Flagship Killers
The mid-premium segment is extremely popular among consumers. Consumers want the best value for their investment. The $400 to $700 range is where most people look to get the best value for money. In search of the best value, customers always look to find phones that provide a similar flagship experience. The choice of processors is very important for smartphone manufacturers in this range. MediaTek chipsets have become a popular choice in this price segment. They are less expensive than rival Qualcomm processors and more importantly, they help to keep the cost down.
Success Of Dimensity Processors
Brands like OnePlus, Realme, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi have used Dimensity processors in many of their premium mid-range and budget flagship phones. They have been pretty successful too. Phones like Xiaomi 11T, OnePlus Nord 2, Oppo Reno 6 Pro 5G, Vivo X70 pro, Realme GT Neo have used the Dimensity 1200. It was the best MediaTek had then. They all performed pretty well and earned good reviews from all over the world. Similarly, other Dimensity processors like Dimensity 1100, 1000+, 800U, and 810, etc have also been praised.
Unveiling of The Beast – Dimensity 9000
According to rumors, the successor of Dimensity 1200 was previously said to be named Dimensity 2000. But, as we now know the latest entrant in the series of flagship chipsets by MediaTek is the Dimensity 9000. This launch has made MediaTek’s intentions very clear. They are now aiming for the top spot. At least on paper, the Dimensity 9000 looks to be the one to look out for in the upcoming year. It is based on the TSMC 4nm-class production. It supports LPDDR5X RAM, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6E, 3CC Carrier Aggregation, the world’s first 320MP camera support for smartphones, and 8K@30FPS & 4K@120FPS video recording capabilities. Dimensity 9000 brings the world’s first Arm Mali-G710 MC10 graphics processor, the industry’s 1st raytracing SDK using Vulkan for Android, 180Hz FullHD+ display support. That’s a lot of the world’s firsts.
What The Future Holds For MediaTek
MediaTek has really upped their game. The Dimensity 9000 is a game-changer. I think this may very well be the year where MediaTek will go toe to toe with the latest Qualcomm chip. The Taiwanese brand has made the first step in this regard. The only thing left to see is how this processor fares in real-life tests. Will it overcome the security and stability issues MediaTek chips have had in the past? Only time will tell. Reliable leaker, Ice Universe, has reported that Xiaomi, OnePlus, Realme, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo and even Samsung are going to use this new Dimensity 9000 processor. MediaTek is on the right path and will become a formidable competitor for Qualcomm if they carry on this path.
