Recently YouTube announced that they will be removing dislike count from videos for the public eye. The number of dislikes on a video will no longer be visible to anyone but the creator of the video. Everyone has mixed reactions to this step.
Removing Dislike Count From Videos
YouTube believes the change will better protect its creators from harassment and reduce the threat of what it calls “dislike attacks” essentially when a group teams up to drive up the number of dislikes a video receives.
The button to dislike the video will still be there, only the number that is usually visible will no longer be visible to anyone but the creator. Users can still click the thumbs down button on videos to signal their dislike to creators privately. Meanwhile, creators will be able to track their dislikes in YouTube Studio alongside other analytics about their video’s performance.
There sure are some pros and cons to this step;
Pros,
Content Creators will be saved from bullying and targeted dislike attacks. No one will feel the need to dislike a video because of the pressure of many people doing it.
Cons,
This will be another inconvenience for the people, for example, if you are looking for a tutorial and find a video. At the first glance, you will know how the video is. If there are too many dislikes, you may check the comments and find out that the video is a lie, so you skip watching it. However, now you can’t know about a video without watching it.
Furthermore, dislikes did trigger the YT algorithm, if a video is genuinely bad if it has racism, blasphemy or trolling the dislike count would be helpful for other people visiting the content creators’ channel.
For me, removing dislike count from videos is not a great idea, because if you want to protect people from hate, you can’t this is something you have to deal with. After removing the dislike count, will YouTube also remove the comments? these are ways to know if a video is worth your time or not. Following that, other companies like Instagram have also bought this feature to “hide likes” from a person’s posts so that they will only be visible to the person who posts.
