How to unlock the Bootloader on Xiaomi phone
You will have to request an unlock from Xiaomi, usually, they don’t get in the way. But if they do, you would have to wait for 15-16 days before trying again. However, here is how you will start.
1. Download & install the Unlocker
You will have to download the unlocker on your PC. You can do it by searching the web, or just follow this link and click download.
After downloading, open the setup and install. The tool then greets you with a disclaimer that you have to accept if you want to continue.
2. Connect your account
Most Xiaomi users already have a Mi Account, but if this is your first device, you have to register or log in to continue. You can register using Facebook or your active phone number too.
3. Connect the devices
In order to connect the smartphone to your PC, you will have to first open developer mode. To do this you would go to settings of your phone, go to about device, search for the build number and then keep tapping the number until you see “You are now a developer” message pop-up.
Now go to the unlocked developer settings and navigate to the Mi Unlock Status menu item. Log in, provide your password, agree to the terms and conditions, you know how it all goes. Finally, enter your password, confirm it again and then it’s finally time to unlock the bootloader.
Now, switch off your device, connect it to the PC using the USB cable. Then power on the device by holding power + volume down simultaneously until you get to the bootloader screen.
4. Install & Unlock
The appropriate drivers for Windows to perform this function are included in the Mi Flash Tool for you. To do this, simply open the “MiUsbDriver” application and the drivers will install it themselves. Then press Unlock in the Mi Unlock program and a few seconds later you should be ready and the Xiaomi smartphone finally has an unlocked bootloader.
Finally, you are done! Now you can go and install your custom recovery.
