Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro Announced – Sorta!

0

Google Pixel 6 series is one of my most anticipated smartphones of the year. The reason behind this is the leaks and rumors which we were getting. A new Google-made chipset? New design? Well, yes! It’s now official and as we have seen in the leaks: there is a new Google chipset and a new design. However, do note that Google Pixel 6 series is more teased than announced. The focus of this announcement was more about the Tensor SoC.

Meet Tensor SoC

Tensor SoC is the name of the new chipset by Google. The chipset is named after Tensor Processing Units (TPU) which is used in Google Data Centers. With this chipset, Google gets more control over the device. Google powers a mobile TPU for AI operations and a new Titan M2 chip for security. However, it’s still unclear about the CPU, GPU, and 5G modem. Probably, Samsung is behind the rest of the chipset but it is not announced as of now.

According to Google, the company has been working on the chip for 4 years. The main focus of this week’s announcement is artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities with Tensor SoC. We will talk more about Tensor SoC in a separate post. For now, you should know that Tensor SoC will be a big improvement in the camera of the device. With its ML capabilities, it can sharpen up a blurry picture and improve the video capabilities of the Pixel 6 series.

Meet Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

The design of the Pixel 6 series will either be liked by you or you will hate them. Personally, I love the new design. It is bold. The glass sandwiches design language finally gives Pixel a flagship look. The camera is aligned in a bar that runs the full width of the phone. There is a metal rail to protect the glass from scratches. For sure, this camera will have to sit flat. Google’s solution is to “celebrate and highlight” it!

Google Pixel 6 Color Options

The Pixel 6 Pro has a shiny polished aluminum frame. For the vanilla model, Google went with a more subtle matte-finished corner. Of course, the shiny aluminum looks more premium and eye-catching. The devices come in three different color options each. Have a look at them below.

Google Pixel 6 Pro Color Options

Now, let’s talk about the hardware. The Google Pixel 6 Pro will come with a 6.7-inch QHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Expect a slightly curved edge with the Pro version, it is an acceptable curved display not really harsh. While, the vanilla Pixel 6 will sport a 6.4-inch FHD+ screen with a 90Hz refresh rate. It is a flat panel.

Talking about the camera, the Pixel 6 Pro has a triple rear camera setup. It features an all-new wide-angle main sensor, an ultrawide, and a 4X optical-zoom folded telephoto lens. The vanilla Pixel 6 has a dual-camera setup featuring the wide-angle main and ultra-wide. It does not have a telephoto lens. On the front, there is a punch-hole notch for selfie shooter on both devices.

Pixel 6 display

As mentioned above, the Pixel 6 series will feature the Tensor SoC, and a Titan M2 security chip. Finally, you will get an in-display fingerprint sensor on both smartphones. For now, we don’t have information regarding the battery or more information. The devices will come out later in the year – probably October 2021. Stay tuned for more!
