In the last 2 years, we have witnessed a new phone market being created for foldable phones. Samsung came out with their own and so did Huawei. Huawei’s first-gen of foldable contained the Mate X and Mate Xs, both of which had a different design to the Galaxy fold as they folded out utilizing half of the full screen. The design looked cool but had its flaws of being not so durable. In this article, we are going to answer some frequently asked questions (Huawei Mate X2 FAQs).
Now, Huawei has launched the Mate X2 with an inward folding design which is just like the Galaxy Fold. Will it be a competition for the Fold? Lets check it out in the Huawei Mate X2 FAQs below.
What is new about Huawei Mate X2?
The New Huawei Foldable called the Huawei Mate X2 just got launched in China, with an inward folding design resembling the Galaxy Fold. It is quite an expensive retail phone.
An unboxing video of the phone shows that the phone does come with a charger and no ordinary one but a 66w SuperCharger! The phone also comes with screen protectors pre-installed on both the screens as well as a leather protective case can also be seen. It also has a built-in kickstand that can prop up the phone whether it’s opened or closed.

How has the Design changed?
On this phone, we see an inward folding design with 2 screens, a smaller screen on the outside is 6.75″ (2,700 x 1,160, 21:9 aspect ratio) for normal use, and then as we open the device we see a huge 8″ (2,480 x 2,200) 2K display. While on the previous models we saw only one screen that folded outwards making use of half of the screen.
The hinge mechanism on this one folds the device shut leaving a small teardrop gap so that the OLED would not get completely bent, while on the previous models the OLED would get curved because of the bending style. This device is at 4.4mm thickness when measured around the tapers of the cameras vs 5.4mm of Mate X.
We get to see 4 colors for this device, having more options is never a bad thing as previous models had only one or 2.
Further, we see that the phone has a “Center of Gravity Shifting Design” which claims that the phone will always feel balanced in your hands no matter in which form you are using it. It’s a new design feature that can’t be compared.
What are the Specifications? How does it compare?
We see that the display has a 90Hz refresh rate, the device comes with the top-of-the-line Kirin 9000 chipset with 8GB of RAM, 256GB, or 512GB of storage, a 4,500mAh battery, and 55W wired charging. We don’t get wireless charging.
Other notable specs include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, an IR blaster, and NFC.
And in comparison here are the Specifications of the Galaxy Z fold 2
We see on the Galaxy a 120Hz refresh rate, the chipset is Qualcomm SM8250 Snapdragon 865+ (7 nm+) with 12GB RAM, 256GB, or 512GB of storage, a 4,500mAh battery, and 25W wired charging. We do get fast wireless charging as well. Other notable specs include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 5, an IR blaster, Samsung Dex, and NFC.
How is the Selfie Camera Housed?
The selfie camera is a dual-camera that is housed in a hole-punch similar to the Samsung S10+
How is the Camera?
On the camera department, we see a quad rear camera setup, featuring a 50MP RYYB main camera, a 16MP ultra-wide shooter, a 12MP 3x telephoto lens, and an 8MP 10x periscope zoom camera. The main and ultra-wide, both are equipped with OIS and can record in up to 4K 60fps. On the front side, we see a 16MP camera in a punch-hole capable of doing 1080p at 60fps. The camera as we know so far performs very well in the day as well as in low light. It is a high-level sensor system.
Does it come with GMS?
No, this phone won’t come with Google services at all.
What does the Box include?
The phone comes with a huge 66w charger out of the box. We also see a leather protective casing, some earphones, and a cable.
How has the Hinge Mechanism changed?
The hinge is the most important factor of a folding device, with this Huawei we can see that the hinge now shows almost no gap! It does have a little teardrop-style gap that would protect the screen from permanent crease or damage. The hinge is made from Zirconium-based liquid metal and carbon fiber panels which help in reducing weight. Look at how clean it looks compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
What Competition will it have?
The only real competitor this phone has is the Galaxy Z fold 2. Both phones come on par with the specifications but Mate X2 really takes a blow regarding having no Google services. Seeing this phone get popular outside China will be rare. Like if anyone is willing to pay such a huge amount for a phone they do want some kind of reliable and well working service. On the specs side, we also see that the Z-fold 2 has an upper hand and it’s cheaper.
Is the body Glass or Plastic?
The body of the phone is mainly glass, only the flexible part of the inner screen is plastic.
What is the Pricing of Huawei Mate X2 in Dollars?
The price of the Mate X2 was revealed to be 17999 yuan for the 256 GB variant and 18999 yuan for the 512 GB variant which comes to around 2800$ and 3000$ respectively.
Is Huawei Mate X2 value for money?
If you ask my opinion, I will say no. Personally this phone is overpriced if you compare it. The Galaxy Z fold 2 has better specs and costs less, and plus this phone also lacks Google Services.
