Huawei just unveiled and announced its successor to its folding X series, the Huawei Mate X2. And it seems that the X2 will be adopting the inward folding design similar to how the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 folds and is also equipped with a periscope camera which makes it the first foldable to have such. Let’s talk about the:
Design
The Huawei Mate X2 might be one of the slimmest foldable ever showcased and is only thick at its rear camera module while slowing slimming it down at the other side with 4.4 mm. The camera bump in the rear makes it quite the thickest part of the foldable and this is due to- having a Periscope Camera! It weighs around 295 grams, which is quite heavy. Most of the weight is due to the thickest part, but that part can also act as a grip and can be used one-handed, and also means you can close it with one hand.
Display
The Huawei Mate X2 has 2 displays equipped, the inner and the outer display. The Inner Display measure 8″ in diagonals and has a kind of square aspect with a ratio of 8:7:1 and a resolution of 2480×2200. As for the outer display, it is 6.45” in diagonal and has a 21:9 aspect ratio and 2480×2200.
Both displays have a refresh rate of 90 Hz which is quite good and better than 60 Hz with a balanced resolution of 2K.
The only difference between the two displays are:
- The internal display supports DCI-P3 colors (more vibrant 10-bit colors).
- The touch sampling rate among the two displays is quite different, the external supports 240 Hz while the internal supports 180 Hz only.
The internal display is boasted by the industry’s first-ever “magnetically-controlled nano-optical layer”. This is one way to say that it significantly reduces the light reflection and glare. (Below 1.5% if compared to Galaxy Fold 2 it has higher than 5%)but there is no any sort of Ultra Glass Protection within, so there are few comprises what you get but pretty worthy ones.
Hinge Mechanism
The hinge is one of the key essential aimed within a foldable and it seems Huawei kind of nailed it on what the outcome the Mate X2 folds. The hinge for the Huawei Mate X2 seems to close quite perfectly making it quite gap-less when it closes. The OLED panel being used in the display has less creasing and uses some sort of teardrop shape in order to decrease the crease. Huawei is using an advanced and improved hinge from its predecessor this time the hinge design is being built with Zirconium-based liquid metal and carbon fiber panels which help in reducing weight. Even tho it’s still quite heavy with its 295g.
Internal Specifications
The Huawei Mate X2 is powered by the company’s latest chipset, the Kirin 9000. Which still performs really well and is among the flagships. Surprisingly the Mate X2 is running the EMUI 11 based on Android 10 ( Do Note That It still doesn’t have Google Servies and is havings its own ecosystem) instead of the Harmony OS but it should change once it’s out to the public and has super strong and speedy 5G capabilities built around the device. There are only one RAM option and multiple storage options- 8GB RAM with 256 GB or 8GB RAM with 512GB of storage. And has a fingerprint sensor at the side within the power button.
It consists of a 4,500 MaH battery supporting up to 55W Fast Charging and no wireless charging. And surprisingly, it consists of a leather protective cover, screen protectors pre-applied on both displays, and also USB-C cable and USB-C Earphones although there is no headphone jack available and 66W charging (to even charge laptops if needed) in the retail box.
Camera
Huawei as usual always goes with the impressive camera setups on a flagship device, and the Mate X2 has them all. It has a Quad Camera Rear Setup, the main camera is 50MP with a 1/1.28′ RYYB sensor, and is equipped with OIS stabilization and f/1.9 aperture and can be folded to take selfies.
There is also an Ultrawide camera equipped with 16 MP and can act as a Macro Camera as well with close shots up to 2.5cm. As for the Zoom Capabilities, the Mate X2 is equipped with a two periscope camera firstly an 8MP, 10x Periscope Camera f/4.4 OIS which offers 20x hybrid zoom and up to 100x digital zoom and a mid-range zoom with 3x Magnification taking 12MP shots equipped with an OIS. These sensors can record up to 4K 60 FPS on all rear camera sensors.
As for the selfie camera, there is only one selfie camera on the outer display, and there is none on the inside display. This also means it will be difficult to attend any sort of E-Meeting with the Camera or apps using cameras when completely folded. It has a 16MP Selfie Camera with f/2.2 aperture and 1080p 60FPS video recording.
Pricing
The pricing for the Huawei Mate X2 is very expensive and might require selling both of your kidneys. The Huawei Mate X2 will be available for now in China Only with the base ( 8 GB RAM + 256 GB )price of 18,000 CNY (around 2,800$) and the 8GB+512 GB storage costing 19,000 CNY (around 3000$) and is available in 4 colors (black, pink, white and blue).
