Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G Announced For Mid-Range Smartphones

2020 is the year of 5G, and thanks to the Chinese companies, they have been pushing 5G to even low-end smartphones. Today, Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 690 5G, which is the first-ever 600 series 5G Chipset. The new chipset is aimed for mid-range smartphones and the goal is to provide 5G even at an affordable price segment.

Cristiano Amon, president, Qualcomm Incorporated said about the new 600 series chipset:

“With over 375 5G designs launched or in development to date using Qualcomm Technologies’ 5G solutions, we are driving the proliferation of 5G across multiple tiers to make the next generation of camera, artificial intelligence, and gaming experiences more broadly available. Driving the expansion of 5G into the Snapdragon 6-series has the potential to make 5G accessible to more than 2 billion smartphone users around the world.”

The new chipset supports 5G communication in the Sub-6GHz band and does not support millimeter waves. The new chipset does not only feature 5G but is also capable of good performance. The new chipset is based on Samsung’s 8nm LLP process, which makes it very efficient.

It can score anywhere around 250000 to 300000 in AnTuTu. Moreover, it also supports a 120Hz refresh rate, which will be a delight for gamers. Snapdragon 690 is equipped with the latest 5th generation Qualcomm® AI Engine, enabling the smart camera and video, voice translation, advanced AI-based imaging, and AI-enhanced gaming experiences.

Qualcomm® Kryo™ 560 CPU comes with the ARM’s newer A-77 cores clocked at 2.0GHz which features up to 20% performance improvement compared to Snapdragon 675. While the other six cores are e remaining six cores are based on A-55 clocked at 1.7GHz. The new chipset supports LPDDR4x with a maximum size of 8GB RAM.

Lastly, the 690 5G supports 4K HDR (true 10-bit) support to capture over a billion shades of color. It is capable to capture images up to 192 Megapixels.

The new chipset is aimed at mid-range devices. And companies including HMD, LG, Motorola, SHARP, TCL are planning to release a smartphone equipped with Snapdragon 690 5G. I am really excited to test out the new chipset, are you looking forward to it?
